If you have missing teeth, you know firsthand how much it can affect your quality of life. Fortunately, dental implants are an excellent solution that can help patients eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence once again! Since implants fuse with the bone tissue during the healing process, they’re able to provide unmatched stability and lasting results. To optimize your recovery, here are a few things you should avoid doing after dental implant surgery.

Smoking or Using Tobacco Products

As mentioned earlier, dental implants rely on a process known as osseointegration. It’s what allows the jawbone to develop and grow around the implant, providing durable and lasting results. If you smoke or use tobacco products, it’s a good idea to quit before or after the procedure. These poor habits can affect the mouth’s healing process and hinder your recovery following dental implant surgery. What’s worse, it can increase your risk of implant failure.

Vigorous Rinsing

After your dental implant procedure, it’s strongly recommended that you avoid rinsing vigorously throughout the rest of the day as well as the following day. Otherwise, you can aggravate the implant site and cause bleeding. When cleaning your teeth, gently swish an antiseptic mouthwash or warm salt water around your mouth to disinfect the areas. Instead of spitting the fluid out, let it flow naturally out of your mouth over the sink.

Strenuous Exercise

Avoid strenuous exercise and intense physical activity for the first two to three days following your dental implant surgery. It can increase blood flow and lead to bleeding around the dental implant area. You must give your body plenty of time to rest so it can heal quickly and properly! That said, you should wait until you’re cleared by your dentist before engaging in physical activity.

Eating Hard, Hot, & Spicy Foods

During your recovery, you’ll want to be mindful of the foods you eat. It’s best to stick to a diet of soft, pureed foods for the first few days following dental implant placement. Avoid eating hard, hot, and spicy foods because they can negatively affect the healing process. Once you start to feel more comfortable, you can gradually progress to firmer food. Just make sure you chew on the side of your mouth away from the implant site.

Using a Straw

Do not drink with a straw after your surgery! The suction created in the mouth can dislodge the blood clot forming over the implant site, leading to a painful condition known as a dry socket. It’s also a good idea to stay away from carbonated drinks like soda and sparkling water because they can irritate the gum tissue around the implant site.

Are you ready to replace your missing teeth with dental implants? By not doing the things outlined above, you can ensure a speedy and successful recovery from dental implant surgery!
